The Tradition of Advent Calendars

The Holiday season is full of magical memories. Many of us fondly remember waking up and running to the Advent calendar to see what each day’s special treat would be. While you don’t need an Advent calendar to know that Christmas is coming, opening up those little doors made every day feel like a mini-Christmas!

Today there are many different kinds of Advent calendars, from social media Advent calendars to heirloom calendars passed from generation to generation. And modern Advent calendars are often not specifically Christmas themed, so this fun activity can fit into each family’s unique holiday tradition.

The fun of an Advent calendar is something that everyone – religious or not – can enjoy!

Why Celebrate Advent?

advent calendarThe tradition of an Advent calendar is a wonderful way to enjoy every single day of the holiday season while counting down to Christmas Day. By taking the time to enjoy a moment of surprise and joy every day, we can slow down, be more mindful, and really appreciate the holidays all month long.

The History of Advent

advent calendarAdvent has been associated with the Christmas holiday since the 19th Century. Traditionally, Advent is the four week period leading up to Christmas, during which people excitedly count down to the Holiday.

The first record of an actual Advent calendar comes from 1851 and was made entirely by hand. In the 20th century, Advent calendars evolved into the format we know and love. Today we have paper calendars with little doors to open for each day leading up to Christmas, each door containing a different small surprise.

Though you might not know it from the stores (which released Christmas decorations in October this year), this four-week period is the traditional time for counting down to Christmas Day. Today many people shorten this period to just the 12 days before Christmas itself. In 2019, the Advent Season will be from Sunday, December 1st to Tuesday, December 24th, Christmas Eve.
