Keeping it Clean this Spring with Essential Oils

It’s that time of year again when we can finally open the blinds and windows to allow the warm sunshine into our homes…while also illuminating the dust and cobwebs that have taken over all of the nooks and crannies! Unless you are like those of us living in Idaho — where mother nature cannot make up her mind. C’mon! We are tired of the snow and would love that sweet sunshine!

No matter where you are or what weather you’ve been dealt, it’s safe to say that we are all facing spring cleaning once again. Spring cleaning may not be something everyone looks forward to (I certainly do not), BUT we are here to help revive your home with some easy, fun, and safe for the whole family DIYs!

Being a mother to three small children, it is always a priority of mine to 1. Make sure I am finding the easiest and most efficient way to get things done. Three kids demand your attention and constantly need snacks, so I do not have time to fuss over a million different cleaners to tackle baseboards and bathtubs.

And 2. I want to make sure the products I am using are safe for my whole family, fur children included. This means finding products without the harsh chemicals!

Thankfully, Mother Nature has a whole arsenal of oils that are safe and effective in making sure my home is clean and smells amazing (even if she is dishing out some less than pleasant weather)! Switching over to more natural products has made both of these things possible, so I wanted to share a few of my all-time favorite DIYs to hopefully help make your spring cleaning a lot less stressful!

  • 15 drops Lime
  • 8 drops Cardamom
  • 6 drops Grapefruit
  • 6 drops Sweet Orange
  • 1 teaspoon Castile Soap or Sal-Suds

What you’ll do:

  • Add all ingredients to the bottle and shake.
  • Spray and wipe off to clean.

Store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Dusting Spray

This DIY dusting spray uses a combination of oils and water to help trap dirt and dust and leave your surfaces shiny.

What you’ll need:

  • 6 drops Jojoba Carrier Oil
  • 10 drops of your favorite citrus essential oil
  • 4 ounces of water
  • Spray bottle
  • Microfiber cloth

What you’ll do:

  • Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle.
  • Spray and wipe with a microfiber cloth until shiny.

Store in the fridge and use within a couple of weeks. If you want, you can add a preservative to prolong shelf life.

Tub & Sink Cleaner

What you’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup Castile Soap
  • 1/4 cup washing soda
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 20 drops Lemon (or your favorite citrus oil)
  • Small container to hold the soap

What you’ll do:

  • Combine all ingredients in a medium glass bowl
  • Mix well to blend together
  • Press paste into a mold and allow to dry for a few hours until firm
  • Once set, remove from mold (I used an old 4 inch round butter container)

To use the bar, wet and rub the surface of your sink or tub. The bar will gently remove dirt and soap scum. Wipe clean with a damp rag. Rinse with cool water.

Enjoy your beautifully clean tub or sink!
