How to Use a Gua Sha

If you’re new to gua sha, don’t worry. It’s much simpler than it looks. A gua sha is a facial massage tool designed to glide across the skin alongside a facial oil, helping turn your skincare routine into a calming, spa-like ritual.

We especially love pairing it with our new Advanced Antioxidant Facial Oil, since facial oils help the tool glide smoothly across the skin without tugging or pulling.

Before You Start

Before using your gua sha, start with clean skin and apply a generous amount of facial oil, serum, or moisturizer. This helps the tool glide comfortably across the skin without pulling.

A few additional tips:

  • Hold the tool at about a 35–45 degree angle, keeping it nearly flat against the skin

  • Use light to medium pressure

  • Keep movements slow and gentle

  • Never use the pointed edge directly against the skin

  • The skin should feel relaxed, never sore or irritated

There are many different gua sha techniques, but the most important thing is using gentle pressure and consistent outward motions.

Repeat each motion 3–5 times per area using slow, gentle strokes.

Neck

Start at the base of the neck and glide upward toward the jawline. Many people like to begin here before moving upward across the face.

Jawline and Chin

Using the notched side of the tool, start at the center of the chin and glide outward toward the earlobe.

Cheeks

Use the longer flat side of the gua sha to sweep from the side of the nose outward across the cheeks toward the hairline.

Under Eyes

Using very light pressure and the smaller curved edge, glide from the inner corner of the under-eye area outward toward the temple.

Forehead

Start between the brows and sweep upward and outward toward the hairline.

How Often Should You Use a Gua Sha?

You can use a gua sha daily or a few times a week depending on your routine. Many people enjoy using it as part of their nighttime skincare ritual to help slow down and unwind at the end of the day.

Even just a few minutes can make your skincare routine feel more intentional and relaxing.

Caring for Your Gua Sha

After each use, wash your gua sha with warm water and gentle soap, then allow it to fully dry before storing.

Keep It Simple

The best gua sha routine is the one you’ll actually stick with. You don’t need complicated techniques or a lengthy routine to enjoy it. Pair it with a nourishing facial oil, use gentle pressure, and take a few minutes to enjoy the ritual.
