Before you open your first bottle, here's a closer look at where our pine oil comes from and how it smells.
Pine Tree Essential Oil Origins
Our pine tree essential oil comes from Pinus sylvestris, better known as Scots Pine. This hardy evergreen grows across much of Europe, and the batches we carry are sourced from Austria and Hungary. It is one of the most familiar conifers in the world, and its oil carries that classic, recognizable pine character. Its tall, straight trunk and blue-green needles make it easy to spot in the wild, and its fresh, sweet-green woody scent has long been part of cozy winter traditions across Europe.
When you open a bottle from Plant Therapy, you are getting a single, clearly identified species rather than a vague mix of evergreens. Each batch undergoes independent GC/MS testing to verify the botanical species and ensure purity, so you know exactly what you are bringing into your home
Pine Needle Essential Oil Explained
If you've been searching for a pine needle essential oil, Scots Pine is exactly that. The oil is steam distilled from the needles of the tree, which is where its crisp, green personality comes from. You get the aroma of a walk under the branches, captured in a small amber bottle. As it comes straight from the needles, it carries that same fresh smell you notice when you brush past a pine branch on a hike. That direct connection to the tree gives the oil its natural, true-to-life aroma.
A Fresh, Sweet-green Woody Scent
Open the cap and you'll notice a fresh, slightly sweet green note first, followed by a clean, woody depth. It isn't musky or heavy like some woodsy scents, which is why so many people describe it as clean and natural rather than cologne-like. In a diffuser, the bright top notes settle into a softer, woodier finish that lingers pleasantly in the room. It blends especially well with citrus, florals, and other evergreens.
Lab Tested In Every Batch
Like all of our essential oils, Scots Pine is checked through GC/MS, a lab test that shows exactly what's in each bottle. We post the batch reports on the product page and make every bottle without fillers, phthalates, or synthetic fragrance. Each bottle's batch number lets you match it to its own report, and we run ongoing internal checks on every oil we sell, so quality is reviewed more than once.
Pine Essential Oil Benefits For Home And Ritual
Pine's appeal lies in how it changes the feel of a room, and the ways you can enjoy it are wonderfully simple.
A Forest Scent For Any Room
Add a few drops to one of our essential oil diffusers and your living room takes on the feel of a cabin in the woods. It's an easy way to freshen a space after a long winter of closed windows or to welcome guests with something crisp and green. Start with two drops and add a third if you want a stronger presence in a larger space. Running the diffuser in shorter sessions keeps the aroma pleasant rather than overpowering, and it's a wonderful way to bring the outdoors in when the weather keeps you inside.
Fresh Notes For Homemade Cleaners
Many people like adding pine to homemade cleaning sprays or potpourri for that just-cleaned, outdoorsy scent. A few drops go a long way, leaving counters and rooms smelling like a fresh walk through the trees. Pine also pairs beautifully with citrus in homemade sprays for a scent that feels both bright and earthy. Always test any homemade cleaner on a small, hidden area first. A pine-scented spray also makes quick work of freshening a mudroom or entryway after a crisp day.
Seasonal Decorating With Scent
Pine feels especially right from late fall through the holidays. Just a few drops on a wooden ornament, a bowl of pinecones, or dried orange slices can turn a simple display into a fragrant centerpiece. A few drops on a wreath made of natural materials adds a fragrant touch to your front door, and pine brings life to an artificial tree that's missing that fresh-cut smell. Refresh the drops every few days as the scent fades.
Pairing Pine With Other Oils
Pine plays well with others. Blend it with one of our organic essential oils, like organic sweet orange or organic lemon, for a bright, cheerful twist on the classic forest scent. For a softer blend, try pine with lavender, which rounds out the sharper evergreen edges. Two parts pine to one part citrus is an easy ratio to remember. Write down the blends you love so you can recreate them next season.
How To Use Scots Pine
Using pine is simple once you know the basics for each method.
- Diffusing: Add two to three drops per 100 mL of water to an ultrasonic diffuser, or a few drops to a passive diffuser. Start low and adjust to suit the size of your room.
- Topical Use: Always dilute Scots Pine in a carrier oil to no more than 5%, and we don't recommend going higher. Pick a carrier you enjoy, like jojoba or sweet almond.
- Personal Inhalers: A few drops on an inhaler wick lets you carry the scent in a pocket or purse. Replace the wick when the scent begins to fade.
- Storage And Shelf Life: Keep the cap tight and the bottle away from heat; it stays fresh for 2 to 3 years. Write the opening date on the label as a reminder.
Pine Safety For Family And Pets
A few quick notes help everyone in your home enjoy pine with confidence.
Kidsafe, Pregnancy And Nursing Status
Scots Pine carries our KidSafe label and is listed as pregnancy safe and nursing safe on its product page. As with any essential oil, it is important to keep the bottle out of reach of children, use it externally only, and check with your physician if you are pregnant or under a doctor's care. That makes Scots Pine a comforting choice for diffusing a fresh, clean scent in shared family spaces during the holidays. Still, it is best to store the bottle up high and use only the recommended amounts for your room diffuser
Is Pine Essential Oil Safe For Dogs / Cats
We don't recommend using pine essential oil around cats. For dogs, talk with your veterinarian before diffusing or applying any essential oil. Keep bottles stored where pets can't reach them, and wipe up any spills right away.
Conifer Cousins In Our Lineup
If you love evergreen scents, our fir oils make lovely companions to Scots Pine. Fir Needle, Balsam Fir, and Douglas Fir each bring their own spin on the forest aroma, and they're true firs rather than pines, which gives each one its own personality. Many people enjoy keeping one pine and one fir on hand to compare and combine. Each one rewards a side-by-side sniff test. Store them side by side so you can reach for the right one quickly.
Easy Starts For New Oil Users

Once you're comfortable with dilution, you can create your own blends with Scots Pine and a carrier oil. Roll-ons also make tidy little gifts for friends who are curious about oils.
