Pup & Pony Frequently Asked Questions

Canine CBD FAQs

Do dogs have an endocannabinoid system?

Yes, all mammals including dogs have an endocannabinoid system. The ECS helps to maintain homeostasis within the body. CBD can help support balance when the ECS is out of balance.

Can I use Canine CBD Treats or Oil Drops with my cat?

Plant Therapy’s Canine CBD treats were created specifically for dogs and should be used accordingly.

Can I give my dog CBD if they’re taking medications?

At very high doses, research suggests that CBD may inhibit certain liver enzymes, which aid in the proper metabolism of some pharmaceuticals. It may be okay in some instances, but ultimately, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian before administering CBD to your pet.

Will these treats or oil drops make my dog high?

Our CBD dog treats and oil drops are THC-free. This allows you all the benefits of cannabis without this side effect.

How much CBD do I give my pet?

Every pet is different, but we recommend starting with the guidelines we have outlined on our products that break down the dosage by weight.

What is the treat bag made of?

The packaging for the Canine CBD Treats is BDP (Break Down Plastic) Compliant. BDP is an organic biodegradation enhancing polymer that is added to plastic which leads to natural decomposition in an anaerobic, microbe-rich environment such as landfills. This means that the packaging is better for our environment!

Why isn’t the treat bag filled to the top?

Bags are filled by treat count. Bags are not filled to the top but do contain the number of treats specified.

Can I give my dog one of your regular CBD products?

Our Canine CBD products were formulated specifically for dogs, with their need and physiology in mind. We recommend only using Pup & Pony CBD products with your dog.

I think my dog is having a negative reaction. What do I do?

Side effects are rare. But if you notice your dog having an adverse reaction to the CBD, discontinue use immediately and consult your veterinarian.

Issues

I have an animal that is not a dog or a horse (i.e bird, cat, mouse, hedgehog, lizard, snake, fish, ferret, etc). Can I use Pup & Pony products or approved single oils on or around my animal?

Plant Therapy's Pup & Pony products were created specifically for dogs and horses and our list of Pup & Pony approved oils are intended for use with dogs and horses only. We do not recommend using these products on or around any other animals. There are many reasons why we don’t currently recommend essential oil usage with these animals, which may include the animal's metabolic system, the size of the animal, delicate pH levels, as well as sensitive respiratory systems.

What can I use to deodorize my dog’s crate?

Try one of Plant Therapy's Pup & Pony approved hydrosols. Not only do hydrosols help with odor, but they’re also gentle and provide unique therapeutic properties. Lavender is always a great choice for a deodorizer as it helps with unpleasant scents and keeps our four-legged friends calm and relaxed at the same time!

What can I use for itchy skin with my dogs and horses?

Itchy skin is a common concern for both dogs and horses. To help soothe the skin and alleviate the itch we suggest spritzing lavender hydrosol directly on the impacted area.

Can I use Essential Oils as a deterrent to keep my pet from doing a negative behavior? (scratching the furniture, peeing on the floor, chewing on things for example)

Essential oils should never be used as a deterrent or as a punishment for negative behavior with animals.

Often times the unwanted behavior that our animal presents is a sign of an underlying concern. This could be an emotional or physical health issue. We suggest working with your vet to determine the cause and using essential oils for emotional support when needed.

Safety

Does aromatherapy replace veterinary care?

Aromatherapy does not replace veterinary care. If your animal has a medical condition or takes prescribed medications then we suggest working with your vet before using essential oils as an added benefit.

My animal is on medications already, can I use essential oils along with them?

Certain essential oils have the ability to impact the effectiveness of prescribed medications. If your animal takes prescribed medications, we suggest consulting with your veterinarian before utilizing aromatherapy with your pet.

Can Pup & Pony essential oil blends be used on humans?

Absolutely! While Pup & Pony products were formulated specifically for dogs and horses they can be just as beneficial for humans. If you struggle with anxiety and are looking for a product to instill a sense of calm try Confident K9. If you're looking for another immune supporting blend then Show Ready is a perfect choice.

  • Confident K9: 2-3%
  • Happy Trails: 2-3%
  • Horse Whisperer: 2-4%
  • Show Ready: 2-3%

How do I use non-KidSafe Pup & Pony blends when I have a child in my home?

  • Use our Paw Pal Diffuser with properly diluted essential oil.
  • Dilute and apply Pup & Pony blends directly on your dog or horse.
  • Create a linen spray and lightly spray your dog or horses linens.
  • Try incorporating essential oils into your dog/horse’s bath time routine.

What oils are not safe for pregnant/nursing animals?

Plant Therapy recommends consulting with your vet before using any essential oils with pregnant or nursing animals.

Are the same oils that are safe for larger animals safe to diffuse around smaller dogs?

Plant Therapy's Pup & Pony products and list of Pup & Pony safe oils are safe for use with dogs and horses when used according to our dilution and diffusion recommendations. With this said, it’s important to remember that animals are sensitive to strong scents and some may not respond well to the use of essential oils. If your animal experiences any kind of adverse reaction to the essential oils on this list please discontinue use immediately.

"X" website states that "y" essential oil (herb, plant, etc) is unsafe for use with dogs/horses. Can you explain why it is on your approved list?

When used as directed (i.e. diluted according to the Pup & Pony dilution chart or diffused following the Pup & Pony guidelines), all of the essential oils found on our Pup & Pony approved list are safe for use.

Is topical application safe if my pet licks it off?

When applying essential oils topically to pets we understand that the risk of ingestion is increased. This is one of the reasons we recommend such conservative dilutions for topical application. We do not encourage ingestion with pets, but if Pup & Pony products are accidentally ingested these dilutions are very safe. If you have any concerns with applying Pup & Pony blends topically then diffusion is always a great choice.

Product Questions

How do I use Pup & Pony approved essential oils around my animals?

  • Separate your dog or horse from other sensitive animals when diffusing.

Can I diffuse for longer than the suggested amount of time?

Plant Therapy recommends diffusing our Pup & Pony blends for 5-10 minutes every few hours. These guidelines are in place because our animal companions are so sensitive to strong smells, and can be easily overwhelmed.

If you’d like to diffuse for longer periods of time, we suggest running the diffuser in a well ventilated or open room and ensuring that your animal has the ability to move away from the unit. Be sure to pay close attention to how your animal is reacting to the blend before extending the diffusion time.

Can I use a higher dilution rate than suggested?

Plant Therapy's dilution guidelines for Pup & Pony products are recommendations for a large area of application. We always recommend starting with the lowest dilution and adding more as needed for specific applications. For spot treatment of an acute issue, higher dilutions may be used. But in general, we do not recommend using dilutions higher than 1-2% with dogs and higher than 3-5% with horses.

Can I diffuse more oil than is suggested?

We recommend diffusing 1-2 drops of our Pup & Pony blends per 100 ml of water in your diffuser. These guidelines are in place because our animal companions are so sensitive to strong smells and can be easily overwhelmed. If you would like to add more drops of the blend to your diffuser when diffusing, then we suggest starting slowly and increasing the volume one drop at a time.

Also, be sure to diffuse in a well ventilated/open room and ensure your animal has the ability to move away from the unit if needed. Be sure to pay close attention to the way your animal is reacting to the blend before increasing the amount of essential oil you use.
