The essential oil is obtained from the roots of the Periploca sepium, also known as the Chinese Silk Vine. This climbing vine explodes with fragrant summer blooms of green and purple flowers against showy, dark green glossy leaves. However, it is the roots of this deciduous shrub that are most valuable, thanks to its unique and intoxicating aroma. At full strength, Periploca is thick and mostly solid, making it unusable in many applications. To make this into a workable product for diffusion, topical applications, and DIYs, the natural fragrance fixative ingredient triethyl citrate has been added. This gentle, biodegradable ingredient helps to thin out Periploca, making it mobile enough to use in a variety of ways.
