Carrier Oils: Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know

carrier oils everything you want to knowOn the never-ending quest for the perfect essential oil recipes, you’ve probably come across the phrase “carrier oil” a time or two. Typically used to dilute essential oils, carrier oils are commonly employed in skincare, cleaning products, aromatherapy and diffuser recipes, and are good to have on hand if you want to apply oil to your skin directly or dial back a specific oil’s scent or intensity. All EOs should be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to the skin. Continue reading

When Life Gives You Elevens

By Ellen Brenner, Certified Aromatherapist

Almost exactly two years ago, this happened.

I got in the car, turned it on and this was the odometer exactly. I could have missed it, or I could have been driving. But, that wasn’t the case. I believe the image was there to get my attention.

Up until this point, I had been seeking answers about certain life situations, but I had been spinning a bit.

The opportunity of witnessing the odometer turn to a perfect 100,000 hit me like a ton of bricks. My immediate thought was “what am I supposed to know from this?” You see, I don’t believe in coincidences. I do believe in messages. More on that in a moment.

New Chakra Roll-Ons!

Ever since we first introduced our Chakra Synergy line last Fall, we have had resounding and repeated requests to produce our Chakra Synergy line in pre-diluted roll-ons.

We heard you and we have delivered!

You can now purchase the pre-diluted roll-on chakra synergies as a set of seven, or you can purchase each individually. The set comes in the same beautiful keepsake box as our undiluted synergy line, complete with a printed booklet.

We want to make it simple for anyone who wants to bring self-balancing practices into their life for a greater sense of wellbeing. And, they are perfect for those who are on the go and don’t wish to blend them yourself.

Whether you’re an experienced practitioner of chakra healing techniques or someone who hasn’t even a clue what the word “chakra” means, these roll-ons make a perfect addition to any self-care routine you have.

Want to learn more? One of our amazing Certified Aromatherapists, Ellen Brenner, has written two exceptional blogs that dive deeper into the subjects of chakras and subtle aromatherapy:

Reintroduction of Loving Compassion

With the introduction of our pre-blended Chakra Synergy line, we want to share with you our reintroduction of a fan favorite, Loving Compassion.

The market for Fragonia has been fraught since wildfires burned the solely available crops in December 2015 that were scheduled to be harvested in 2016. Fragonia has been replanted, and the aromatherapy community is hopeful this precious crop will be fruitful. With nature we wait.  It will be at least another year before Fragonia is available again.

Not only is Fragonia a popular single essential oil, it also has been an important supporting essential oil in our Loving Compassion Synergy.  And, demand for both of these favorites ran high.

With all this in mind, and with the introduction of our Chakra Roll-On Synergies, we are very pleased to be able to continue to offer Loving Compassion, introducing Rhododendron in place of Fragonia. We think you will be just as pleased with the similar scent, the same subtle aromatherapy uses, therapeutic value, and price.

Now let’s take a closer look at our new roll-ons!

Each one is diluted at 3% in Fractionated Coconut Oil and can be applied directly to your skin! At 10 mL each, they make perfect travel buddies, too!

How to use the pre-diluted Chakra Synergy roll-ons:

  • Dab them onto the correlating chakra points and rub gently in a clockwise direction.
  • Use as anointing oils by applying directly  to the chakra. Or, anoint the palms of the hands, hold over the chakra, and then inhale.
  • Use on pulse points for a personal aromatic perfume by simply choosing based on how they make you feel.

Grounded Foundation1st Chakra (Root): Use to help, soothe, calm, and relax when you are feeling disconnected and distressed. Helps to create a sense of security, protection, and hope. Supports feelings of trust and belonging. Firmly grounding and centering, while allowing a sense of expansiveness and higher connection.

Grounded foundation has a rich, earthy blend with a hint of sweet spice comprised of oils considered sacred treasures.

Joyful Creation2nd Chakra (Sacral): Use this synergy to help nurture inspired creativity, spontaneity, passion, and expansion in the birth of new concepts. It encourages harmony, warmth, and enthusiasm in relationships. Joyful Creation helps to clear energetic blocks related to relationships and creative expression, while inviting a sense of joy and enthusiasm in moving forward toward transformation.

Joyful Creation has a lushly layered and smooth floral scent that continues to unfold as it reaches the senses.

Self Manifestation 3rd Chakra (Solar Plexus): Helps to quiet the mind so that we may go inward to tap into our own sense of self-definition and autonomy with clarity. This strengthens our sense of self-empowerment with enthusiasm, stamina, and motivation. It nourishes our sense of self-worth with courage, confidence, and optimism. It also invites positive, cleansing energy to support manifestation of our purpose, while encouraging warmth and graciousness toward others.

Self Manifestation has a softly sweet punch of power and spice.

Loving Compassion4th Chakra (Heart): Comforting and calming, use this synergy to help to ease wounds of the heart and nourish the spirit. It helps to clear and cleanse deep wounds and blocks, while opening and uplifting the heart center. This synergy invites positive energy and encourages a joyful outlook and outward connection, and promotes unconditional love for self and others with compassion and acceptance.

Loving Compassion has a soothing and softly rosy and green aroma, that is a synergy for the soul.

True Expression5th Chakra (Throat): Use this synergy to support clear communication in integrity with yourself and others. Soothing, cooling, and calming to the spirit, while nurturing a sense of self-esteem, confidence, and strength, this unique synergy helps to release energetic congestion to create a sense of opening and expansion. It helps to connect to our inner essence, as well as higher consciousness, so that we may know and outwardly express our authentic selves through truth.

True Expression is cooling, fruity, and refreshing with an herbal undertone.

Clear Intuition6th Chakra (Third Eye): Use this synergy to quiet the conscious mind and encourage introspection. Helps to connect to a higher state of consciousness while remaining grounded in peace. Promotes the ability to “clearly see” through intuition, insights, and clarity. It invites creation energy and inspires possibility.

Clear Intuition is a softly intoxicating synergy with fresh and clearing aromas.

Higher Connection7th Chakra (Crown): Use to help strengthen your purpose and ability to connect to higher spiritual consciousness. Invites pure, radiant, and joyful energy allowing connection with greater self-knowledge and our higher selves.  Nourishes the spirit with a sense of wholeness throughout our whole being while helping to heal spiritual wounds. Gently encourages strength in our spiritual growth to know greater love and deeper purpose.

Higher Connection has a warm, shimmering, and radiant heady scent gently wreathing the senses in its bloom.

We hope you enjoy these new roll-ons as much as we do!

Millie On My Mind

By Ellen Brenner, Certified Aromatherapist

Meet Miss Millie!

In honor of National Pet Day, observed annually on April 11, I wanted to introduce you to my new companion, The Magnificent Miss Millie!

We commemorate National Pet Day by celebrating our love for our furry friends. Just as importantly, this day was created to bring awareness to potential pets in need through rescue or adoption, or by bringing assistance to a loved one with a pet who may be suffering from illness or financial setbacks. Do Essential Oils Affect Your Dreams?

Dreams can be amazing and unpredictable experiences. On any given morning you may recall dreams that were wonderfully entertaining, downright bizarre, unforgettably terrifying, or anything in between. Why our brain creates these stories during sleep may still be a mystery, but we do know that a healthy dream cycle relates directly to our emotional and physical well-being [1]. If you want to know how essential oils can promote positive dreams or influence the way a dream plays out, read on!

Why would essential oils influence dreams?

Anything that impacts our emotional state is likely to shape the dreams we have. So, since smells are processed in the brain’s limbic system (which deals with our emotions and memories), even the slightest whiff can arouse powerful feelings. Also, getting to a state of deep sleep is necessary if you are interested in lucid dreaming – dreaming that you are consciously aware of and can, to some extent, control.

Research has shown that external stimuli present during sleeping can affect dream content [2], so let’s take a look at a few essential oils and blends that have been repeatedly linked to better sleep, improved dream recall, and may help create dreams that are vivid and pleasant – helping you get the most out of your nights sleep!

If you’re looking for a wonderfully crafted blend of essential oils to soothe your emotions and set you up for a night of positive dreams, Plant Therapy’s Sweet Dreams Synergy may be just right. Made with Orange Sweet, Juniper, Coriander, Blue Tansy, and Rose, this slightly sweet and spicy aroma is perfect for both children and adults. It is designed to keep bad dreams at bay so that you or your child can rest peacefully without the mental stormy stories that can destroy a good night of sleep. This synergy also comes in a super quick and easy pre-diluted roll-on!

Try this recipe to create an irresistible balm with Sweet Dreams Synergy:

What you’ll need:
What you’ll do:
  1. Melt beeswax, cocoa butter, and coconut oil in a double broiler (or glass bowl over simmering water).
  2. Remove from heat and add 30 drops Sweet Dreams Synergy.
  3. Stir well!
  4. Add glitter (optional)
  5. Pour into tubes, cap it up, and allow to cool completely.
If you want to try single oils to make your dreams sweeter, give these a go in your diffuser or dilute with a carrier oil and use it as a chest or neck rub:

Rose: Popular for its distinct and unforgettable aroma, this essential oil demonstrated its ability to help people have rosier dreams in a study supported by the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany [3]. The rich floral scent has calming properties and helps relax the mind before sleep.

Lavender: This sweet and floral goody is full of therapeutic benefits, particularly relieving restlessness and producing a perfectly calm and tranquil environment. Its use for sleeping has been recorded for centuries; John Parkinson, a famous 17th-century London botanist, wrote that lavender is “especially good for all griefs and pains of the head and brain.” This makes it ideal to put a positive spin on dreams and help you wake up feeling refreshed and positive.

Jasmine: Another sweet and flowery scent, Jasmine is known to aid in deeper and more restful sleep, which leads to pleasant dreams. One study conducted by researchers at the Wheeling Jesuit University found that Jasmine is almost as effective as conventional sleeping aids for falling and staying asleep. The study’s participants were also noted to wake up and remain more energetic, compared to participants who slept in an unscented room [4].

Sandalwood: Revered for centuries to help reduce nervous tension and quiet the mental chatter that often keeps us from falling asleep. The rich, sweet woody aroma is known to improve the quality and duration of sleep. One study published in 2000 by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health found that one of the natural compounds found in Sandalwood, called santalol, notably improved the test subject’s sleeping patterns. Regular deep and restful sleep will keep those happy dreams rolling along!

Got your oils? Don’t forget these tips for sweet dreams!
Keep it clean!

Wash your bedding regularly, at least once every other week. Not only will this keep your bed free of bacteria and fungi growth, it will keep it smelling oh-so-fresh!

Try this DIY linen spray for some extra sleepy-time goodness:

What you’ll need:
What you’ll do:
  1. Add Vodka or Witch Hazel to the spray bottle until almost full.
  2. Add the essential oils.
  3. Allow the oil to meld with the Vodka or Witch Hazel for at least one hour.
  4. Shake well and spray down your bed for a relaxing atmosphere!
Start a dream journal!

Keep a journal and a pen by your bed. When you wake up, write or draw about your dreams. Not only is this therapeutic to the mind, but you may see patterns in your dreams over time. This practice may also increase the intensity of your dreams and the brain’s recall ability when you wake.

Turn off the lights, keep it quiet, and take away any excess stimuli that may negatively impact your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Remember, dreams occur during deep sleep, so if you want to experience your dreams to the fullest, the first step is to focus on your quality of sleep! Autism and Essential Oils

Spread the word – April is National Autism Awareness Month!

With more than 3.5 million Americans living with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this complex developmental disorder has very likely made an impact on your own life or the life of someone you know. Here at Plant Therapy, we want to make you aware of some of the essential oils full of properties believed to support the varying symptoms a person with ASD may experience. However, because each symptom of autism is as unique as the individual diagnosed, consider these suggestions as merely that – suggestions. What works well for one person may not work the same for another! Be patient and understand that ASD is an individualized life-long disorder.

Children and adults with ASD may commonly experience frustration during their day-to-day interactions.

Struggles with verbal and/or nonverbal communication is a prominent symptom of ASD and can severely affect how that person is able to interact with others – even their family members and dearest friends. Maybe you would like to support someone who struggles to regulate their emotions – another common symptom for individuals with ASD. Hyperactivity and aggressive behaviors may stem from a difficulty in understanding another person’s perspective or understand their actions and reactions. To help promote a sense of calm, and to ease feelings of frustration, these essential oils may be just right:

  • Sandalwood – Known to promote mental clarity, while also relaxing and calming the body and mind.
  • Bergamot – Perfect to help experience joy and relieve worry with its fresh and vibrant scent.
  • Blues Buster SynergyBright and uplifting aroma that helps to increase emotional well-being and fight off negative feelings.

People with ASD may also struggle with their ability to focus, organize their thoughts, and stay on task. This especially affects how they perform during school or work. These essential oils are great to calm, focus, and balance the mind!
  • Frankincense – Known to help maintain focus and reduce feelings of stress and negative emotions.
  • Clarity SynergyDesigned to enhance focus and memory. It’s perfect for any task that requires sustained mental effort.
  • A+ AttentionPerfect to help calm an overactive body while bringing focus and clarity, this KidSafe synergy is a great place to start for anyone looking to support an individual with ASD.
  • Vetiver – Quiets an overactive mind and relieves feelings exhaustion.

Many individuals with ASD may struggle to get regular deep, restful sleep. Lack of sleep can seriously impact their attention-span, ability to learn, physical health, mood, and basically make the waking hours more overwhelming and exhausting.
  • Lavender – Calming and known to improve sleep quality, as well as feelings of nervousness and stress.
  • Chamomile Roman – Soothing, comforting, and famous for its calming properties, this is an especially great choice if you’re looking for an oil to help get deep, refreshing sleep.
  • Sweet SlumberCalms, soothes, and relaxes the mind and body. Perfect for kids and adults alike – the name says it all!

These oils can be an amazing compliment to treatments already in place for an individual with ASD (such as behavioral management, family training, and/or prescribed medication). However, since there is a very limited amount of research done on this topic, you should always consult with a physician before making any kind of changes to a treatment plan. If you have a child with ASD and would like to incorporate essential oils into their school day, please check with the school first! Your district may have a policy about bringing essential oils to school, so check with the child’s teacher or administration.

Another quick note: Sensory over-stimulation occurs with many who have ASD. Certain aromas or the strength of aroma may be too aggressive for the individual. Approach each oil cautiously with that specific person in mind.

Essential oils are an amazing way to enhance the quality of living! They can support positive reactions, feelings of self-worth, ease restlessness, improve mental acuity, and so much more!

Have you ever tried essential oils to help support yourself or someone you know with ASD? Tell us in the comments below!

The Ultimate Guide to Allergies and Essential Oils

Allergies happen, and they’re not fun.

You’re not alone! 40-60 million Americans suffer from allergies every year.

Allergies affect everyone differently, ranging from mild sniffles to severe breathing issues and constant itching.

We’ve all been there: When it feels like your eyes just won’t stop watering, or you’ll never stop sneezing. Why even bother wearing makeup when you have to blow your nose every 30 seconds?

We’ve put together a definitive guide to allergies and essential oils to help you out:

What’s an allergy, and what causes them?

Allergies are an abnormal reaction to an otherwise harmless substance, like animal dander, pollen, mold, or certain foods.  An allergy sufferer’s immune system identifies these things as being bad for the body, even when they’re not.

Allergy symptoms are different for everyone,  ranging from minor irritation (sniffles and itching) to anaphylaxis — a potentially life-threatening emergency (in other words, really, really bad news). While most allergies have no true “cure,” there are ways to ease the symptoms associated with them.

How can essential oils help minimize the effects of this seasonal threat?

Essential oils are super concentrated, aromatic liquids extracted from different parts of plant known to help ease symptoms associated with many different issues. Essential oils are also an excellent choice to help ease symptoms associated with allergies, plus they’re a safe (and all-natural) option.

Used for both healing and aromatic benefits, essential oils can help ease symptoms associated with seasonal allergies.

Ways to utilize essential oils to support respiratory relief include:

These are our top 5 best essential oils for symptom relief:

Our team of Plant Therapy Certified Aromatherapists have nailed down the the top 5 essential oils that help ease symptoms associated with seasonal allergies:

There are several ways these Essential Oils can help:

Get on-the-go relief: Personal inhalers are great little tools that you can keep in your pocket or purse. They can go almost anywhere with you, and last for 3-4 months once you’ve mixed them. Perfect for pollen season!

Here’s how to mix your Essential Oils for a personal inhaler:

  1. You’ll need empty personal inhalers, with cotton wicks. Place the wicks in a small glass bowl.
  2. Add 6-8 drops of one of the top five essential oils listed above.
  3. Gently roll the wick through the oil, making sure it is all gets absorbed.
  4. Place the wick into the inhaler and snap the end cap into place.

Get relief at home: Try using one of the top five essential oils listed above in your diffuser at home. 6-8 drops diffused for about 60 minutes will not only make you whole house smell great, but also gives you relief from the respiratory discomfort.

All of the above essential oils are also KidSafe! Which means your whole household benefits, not just the grown-ups.

Get instant relief with a face steam: Use one drop of Fir Needle in a very warm (not boiling!) bowl of water. Position your head over the bowl and cover with a towel for 5 minutes, keeping your eyes closed.

Breath deeply, and let the aroma of Fir Needle penetrate into your lungs.

TIP: Don’t use this technique with small children, and take care to avoid burning yourself with the warm water.

Synergies to support overall respiratory health:

Another great option to help during this time are our 2 synergies created to help with seasonal pollen threats.

Adults can use both synergies, but Clear Again is not KidSafe and not recommended for children under the age of 10.

Use these synergies in a personal inhaler, in your favorite Plant Therapy aromatherapy diffuser, or a diffuser locket.

You can also apply Sneezy Stop to the chest or neck, when diluted at a 1-3% with your favorite carrier oil. And Clear Again when diluted at a 3-5% ratio. This method is great for night time, and lets the oil do it’s work while you sleep.
