January Oil Of The Month – Balm Mint Bush

By: Diane Mishler, Certified Aromatherapist

Rare find- another Stellar Essential Oil from Australia!

Many haven’t heard of Balm Mint Bush and when they do, they might ask, “Are the words backwards? Shouldn’t it be Bush Mint Balm?” Well, whatever you want to call it, it is yet another wonderful, refreshing essential oil from Australia. A member of the mint family, Balm Mint Bush is steam distilled from the leaves of this pretty plant.

The plant itself explains the name as these grow as bushy, evergreen shrubs. With it’s aromatic eucalyptus-minty scent (and a slight floral undertone), the shrubs grow 4-6 feet and have pretty purplish/pink flowers. In 2007, it was deemed Herb of the Year by the International Herb Association.

Balm Mint Bush is rich in keystones. Ketones are valuable constituents for respiratory issues as they have expectorant properties. Ketones are also helpful with healing scars, cuts and can have an positive effect on circulation.  Piperitone is regarded as a generally safe ketone, and is a large percentage (approximately 1/3) of this essential oil. It also contains a safe amount of 1,8 cineole, another constituent that  helps support .respiratory  health. Oils that are high in ketones have a shelf life of 3 to 5 years.

This KidSafe oil is said to have properties that can help with headaches, respiratory issues, teenage skin concerns, cold symptoms, digestive issues, bug bites and cold sores. And its also in cleaning recipes!

Here are two of my favorite recipes using Balm Mint Bush:

Respiratory Blend: (for diffuser or personal inhaler)

3 drops of Balm Mint Bush

2 drops of Kunzea

2 drops of Bergamot

Tummy Blend: (for topical application)

3 drops of Balm Mint Bush

2 drops of Roman Chamomile

1 drop of Spearmint

10 ml carrier oil

Best Essential Oil Diffuser Recipes For Sleep (KidSafe)

By: Kimberly Daun, Certified Aromatherapist

What are the best essential oils for deep sleep?  What are the best essential oils for sleep and relaxation?

These are some of the most common questions I get as a Certified Aromatherapist.  I have to use safe essential oils for kids since I have little ones.  There is no single blend that is the best, it varies from person to person.  Some people feel energized by lavender and sweet orange.  If that’s the case for you then you would want to substitute or omit those essential oils from the recipes listed below.

You’ll notice that I used Amyris in several of these recipes.  It’s been one of my severely underused essential oils, and after starting to blend it I feel like I’ve been missing out!  This great oil has a dry, woody, peppery balsamic aroma.  This essential oil is fabulous for emotional support; relaxation, soothing, uplifting.  It’s also really great for your skin and improves texture and the appearance of fine lines.  Certainly one I’ll be getting out much more frequently!

Top 3 Natural Remedies For Sore Throat

By: Kimberly Daun, Certified Aromatherapist

One of the awful symptoms that I often experience throughout the winter months is a sore throat.  That dreaded feeling of wishing that you didn’t have to keep swallowing your own spit, each time it seems to travel more slowly and be even more painful than the time before.

Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic but honestly, it’s so uncomfortable and finding relief is at the forefront of my mind.  It’s important to see your medical doctor to determine the cause and to use the following recommendations in conjunction with the advice of your doctor.  I encourage you to try all three natural sore throat remedies to determine what works best for you.

My most used synergy to help minimize healing time and ease discomfort is KidSafe Germ Destroyer (you can also use Germ Fighter).  Some single oils I will often use are Sandalwood(2%), German Chamomile(2%), or German Chamomile CO2 (0.1%).

  • Do a steam bowl with 1 drop 2-3 times daily.
  • Add 15 drops to a personal inhaler.
  • Diffuse intermittently throughout the day.  I typically do 30 minutes on and 60 minutes off.  This give my body enough time to process the essential oils without overdoing it.
  • Gargle diluted to 2% in melted virgin coconut oil (you can use the carrier oil of your choice but I find virgin coconut works best for me), try to keep it in for about 30 seconds then spit.  Repeat 2-3 times daily.
  • Dilute to 2% in the carrier oil of your choice and apply to the outside of your throat.  I like to do it in a roller bottle for ease of application.

  • Using a pink salt inhaler for 20 minutes a day may provide additional relief.
  • Dilute pink himalayan salt into a bit of warm water and gargle as long as you can.  Repeat 2-3 times daily.

The process in which hydrosols are made make them more gentle than their essential oil counterparts, they don’t require any dilution.  My favorite ones to use as sore throat natural remedies are; Lavender or Chamomile mixed with half Tea Tree.

  • Spray directly into throat, I would repeat every few hours.
  • Gargle, repeat as desired.
  • Warm compress on the outside of the throat.

Individual Use Bar Soap

By: Kimberly Daun, Certified Aromatherapist

My kids use an excessive amount of everything, toothpaste, dish soap, and even regular bar soap!  I found the perfect solution!  Tiny soaps, small enough for washing your hands just once, no reusing after someone else, or overusing and making a mess.  Plus, these small soaps are super cute!

Get ‘Em Gone

By: Kimberly Daun, Certified Aromatherapist

One of the many things I watch for when my kids get home from school, particularly during winter/hat season, is the dreaded scalp scratch.  The telltale sign of the presence of annoyances.  Here’s a little insight into my life;

My 6 year old comes home from school, happy as usual, huge smile on his sweet face!  I look up at him and my stomach dropped to the floor, panic stricken I sprint to his side, and WHIP this unfamiliar hat off his head and throw it in the yard.  I just received the the third notice of the dreaded scalp itch being found in my kids school in under one month.
I order my 8 year old to rush inside to get my pre-made Gem’Em Gone oil mix.
I instruct my 10 year old to get a grocery bag, put his hand inside and pick up the hat with the bag, pulling the hat into the bag, careful not to let it touch any part of his body, secure it, and dispose of it in the outside trash.
My distraught 6 year old looked up at me with the saddest bright blue eyes and said “Mom, I won that in a raffle from the PTO today”! Thank goodness all of the above happened in under 30 seconds and the hat was still sitting in the yard, unharmed, a few feet away.
Sorry bud, it’s slightly possible that I may have overreacted.

When I was growing up we grabbed for some super harsh chemicals and proceeded to cover our scalp entirely and let those toxins do their job!  Those days of requiring virtual poison are over thanks to Get ‘Em Gone.   Get ‘Em Gone is so powerful that it removes the problem at its source without using toxic chemicals and without resistance, yet it is 100% natural, gentle and safe for your little one.

This essential oil synergy is part of Plant Therapy’s KidSafe line and is the only product of its kind formulated by Robert Tisserand, a world-renowned expert in essential oil safety. Get ‘Em Gone includes the natural effectiveness of Tea Tree and Citronella, both of which have long been used to help get rid of annoyances in the hair and scalp. The Blend also includes the 100% pure oils of Palmarosa, Cedarwood Atlas, Geranium Bourbon, Marjoram and Coriander. All of the oils in Get ‘Em Gone are safe for use on children age 2-10.

How do I use Get ‘Em Gone?

First off I take a more preventative approach, particularly when friends and classmates get that itchy scalp.  Whenever possible I prefer a proactive rather than reactive stance.

  • Add 2% to your hairspray, gel, or detangling spray.  Spray on hair before school, don’t wash, simply let it dry.
  • Add 2% to witch hazel, alcohol, or water and spray on their hat and backpack.  Keep in mind that if you use water or witch hazel that requires additional preservatives that you’ll want to store it in the fridge.

Organic Geranium Egyptian–DIY Night Cream

Organic Geranium Egyptian Essential Oil is one of my favorites for skin.  As I head into my mid thirties I’m trying to get a jump start on wrinkle prevention as well as lightening the lines I have near my eyes.  Geranium Egyptian can help with wrinkles, skin balancing, as well as improved complexion.  If you’re like me and you have spent a lot of time outside, your skin may need a little TLC, simply whip this up and apply nightly.
