What is a Personal Aromatherapy Inhaler?

This little device goes by a few different names.

Personal Inhaler, Aromastick, Aromatherapy Inhaler, and many others. Often times we recommend making a personal inhaler. What does this mean? This is a way to take your aromatherapy with you when you travel, head to work or school, or anytime you’re not at home near your diffuser.

Since inhalation is such an effective method of use for essential oils, it’s a perfect solution.

  • The wick: Where you drop 10-15 drops of essential oil or an essential oil blend
  • The inhaler: The part that you sniff from
  • The lid: The cover that keeps the scent from dissipating too quickly
  • The base:  Keeps everything sealed up tight

However, here are some general ideas for certain circumstances. Remember that for the most part, it only take 10-15 drops TOTAL essential oil!

Essential Oils 101

There are so many misconceptions out there when it comes to using essential oils. Hopefully this article can set the record straight on some of the basics. If you’re new to essential oils, this is a very basic overview. If you’re a veteran user, it never hurts to refresh on the basics!


What are Essential Oils?

An essential oil is a hydrophobic liquid that contains volatile aromatic compounds from plants. Each plant part has a distinct smell, or aroma and can be useful for various therapeutic uses.


How can I use essential oils?

There are several different ways you can make use of your essential oils! The most common are:

  • Topically: Essential oils can be used topically, or on the skin. Topical application is perfect for things such as injury, aches & pains or a skin problem. Bumps, bruises, cut and scrapes can all benefit from the use of essential oils in carrier oil. This article better explains the differences between topical vs. ingestion.
  • Inhaled: They can also be inhaled, using a personal inhaler or a diffuser for your home, and this really is the preferred method for most emotional issues. For calming, try lavender. To promote restful sleep look into using vetiver. There are so many great oils out there, the more research you do the safer you can use them! Here’s more on inhalation: Inhale! The Power of Smell.


Why should I dilute with carrier oil?

Dilution is always recommended for topical use!

When you use essential oils diluted with carrier oil you decrease your risk of sensitization.

A carrier oil is a pure, natural oil specifically for blending your essential oils, to help you avoid sensitization. Some popular carrier oil examples are:

Sensitization can take many forms and usually does not occur at first use. Long-term use of undiluted or neat oils can make a person prone to breakouts, rashes and other skin issues. Eventually this leads to not being able to use certain oils due to the consequences. Click here for more on Sensitization.

To avoid all that, use a good dilution chart in order to properly apply oils to your skin. In case you need more information on carrier oils, you can find that here: Which Carrier is Best for Me?


Which essential oils should I avoid?

Certain oils should be avoided if you have medical conditions or take medications, or based on age:

  • Children under the age of 10 can be sensitive to essential oils, so make sure your oils are KidSafe. Plant Therapy takes the guesswork out of essential oils that are safe for kids with our KidSafe line.
  • People who are sensitive to salicylic acid should avoid wintergreen and birch, since these oils have high concentrations of methyl salicylate.
  • People with a blood clotting disorder should avoid clove, cinnamon bark & leaf, fennel, oregano, and others.

It pays to know which oils can affect the condition or medication you are dealing with. This is why it’s important to do your own research and not rely on what you can find with a quick search from a search engine. Seek out a professional certified aromatherapist and ask lots of questions.


How can I choose a reputable company?

There are many, many wonderful essential oil companies out there to choose from. You may even end up buying from more than one! Here are a few guidelines that I use when choosing my essential oils:

  1. Proper labeling: You should see see several things on your essential oil’s label. First, there should be the full name in both common and Latin. Second, a country of origin should be listed, recommended method of distillation, and chemotypes (if applicable). This ensures you’re getting exactly what you’re paying for. If those items are not available on the label – the company you purchase from will have it on their website!
  2. Descriptions: There should be a description of a few ways you can use the oil. This gives you flexibility in how you can use each oil. Who doesn’t love multi-use items?
  3. GC/MS report: Having access to a GC/MS report is so important. Basically this is a chemical analysis done for each batch of oil. This tells you percentages of certain constituents so when I am selecting an oil, you can be sure you’re getting the constituents you would like to address specific issues.
  4. Access to customer service and/or a professional: In the field of aromatherapy, if the company is willing to communicate with their customers, it shows that they are not just concerned about their bottom line. Choose a company that has your best interest in heart as well as their own. You want to know that if  any questions or concerns come up, you can call or email and get an answer!

Essential Oils for Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, and Sumac

It’s that time of year again, poison ivy time. And around here, I think I actually have more poison ivy than I have of anything else.  (Ok, probably not, but it sure seems that way!)  I had NEVER had a poison ivy breakout before now, so I was quite surprised when I noticed my arm was bright red and twice the size that it normally is.  Then the itch set in…and it itched and itched…

I had to think quick, so posted in our Safe Essential Oils Recipes Facebook group, desperately asking for a helpful essential oil recipe, and got a ton of great (and oily) responses!


1. Make an essential oil infused  Aloe Jelly rub

What you will need:

Mix Aloe Jelly and Essential Oils in a squeeze bottle. Shake well.

Soak a cotton ball in Apple Cider Vinegar and apply to rash. Let it soak in. Once dry, apply aloe vera jelly mixture and allow to dry. Enjoy sweet relief!

Essential Oils for Anxiety, Stress and Depression

Emotional concerns affect many people. Whether it’s just a bad slump, or straight-up depression. We have busy lives, and not feeling emotionally at your best can seriously impact you.

It’s easy to feel anxious, depressed or overwhelmed with busy schedules and hectic lives. A girl’s got to make sure the house is clean, get to work and get the kids to school on time, make dinner, help with homework, get everyone to bed, do even more clean up or laundry, then fall into bed exhausted. We’ve all been there.


Can essential oils help with emotional issues?

The short answer is: They might help, but they won’t cure.

Essential oils won’t cure your emotional issues (such as depression, anxiety or stress) but they can absolutely help boost your self-care routine. But before we get into that, check out our blog post on inhalation.


Which essential oils should I choose?

These are the oils that are known to help with symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress.

Just remember: Scent is incredibly individual. We can make general statements about certain oils, like we did in What are Therapeutic Properties?. But that just gives us a good starting point. Your recipes may still need tweaking in order to work as desired.

DIY Bath Fizzies


I recently have seen a lot of recipes for bath fizzies and got so excited because I remember using these when I was little! I wanted to see how my children would react the first time they saw them, and was a little afraid they would love them so much they would want to use all of them (which they did)!

The thing I loved most about this recipe was how you could use essential oils! How perfect is that! Not only do you get amazing bath fizzies, but you get to make them therapeutic too! I decided that I wanted a batch for when I need to relax. My children needed a batch for when they needed to CALM down. And my family needed a batch for when we were sick.

Bath Fizzies:

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 oats

Mix dry ingredients together until completely combined and smooth. (I ground up oats in my blender and added about 1/4 cup of that too. It protects the skin from irritants and helps soothe skin that’s itchy or irritated.)

Wet Ingredients:

-Worry Free/Relax: Lavender, Relax, Tranquil, Worry Free, or Peppermint (I love the tingly sensation)

-Calming for Children: Calming the Child, Lavender, or Nighty Night

-Sick family: Germ Destroyer or Sniffle Stopper

-Skin problems: Soft Skin, Skin Soother, or Silky Soft

-Aches: Muscle Aid, Rapid Relief, Growing Pains, or Sore No More

  • 1/4 tsp of Meadowfoam  Carrier Oil (preserves the oils)
  • 1/2 tsp of Borax (an emulsifier)
  • witch hazel in a spray bottle (you will have to put it in a spray bottle)
  • natural colorant if desired (I left mine white)

Whisk all of the wet ingredients and Borax together in a large bowl.essential oil diy

Drizzle slowly onto the dry ingredients and blend thoroughly.

Mix with your hands until all of the ingredients are combined.

Lightly spray the mixture 2-3 times with witch hazel.

form in hand (1) The mixture should just start to hold together when pressed in your hand, like slightly moist fine sand. If it’s not sticking together, spray a little more witch hazel.

Pack TIGHTLY into molds. I ordered these fun ones off of, but you could use anything really.  Even a small (1/4 cup) measuring cup.  packed in forms (2)

Let the bath fizzies dry and harden overnight before you pick them up.

You did all this hard (OK maybe not that hard) work, now it is time to take a fizzie and go relax in the bath!



My children are loving the bath fizzies! They usually fight over who gets to put it in the bath. The are always wanting more than one! The best part about these fizzies though is how soft my children’s skin is becoming. My almost 18 month old usually has really bumpy skin, maybe eczema. Since we have been using these bath fizzies, yes just these past few days, his skin has become sooooo soft! I love rubbing his little arms when he comes out of the bath!

I am so excited that not only are these fun and my kids love them, but they are making their skin so much healthier! Thank you bath fizzies!

An Inside Look Into Our Product Name Changes

You might have noticed that several Plant Therapy products have been undergoing name changes. For instance, the synergy formerly called Ban The Bugs is now called Shield Me, and our synergy that used to be known as Headache Relief is now Tension Relief.

Why all the changes?

Plant Therapy is committed to transparency and quality, and as part of that commitment, we are proactively taking steps to ensure that the marketing of our products — including their names — are in compliance with all government regulations. While we have had no problems so far, we are aware that with the increasing popularity of essential oils, government agencies are taking a closer look at our industry. Therefore, we’ve decided to take the necessary steps to ensure there won’t be any disruption in product availability or price increases due to compliance issues down the road.

What are the regulations?

It is the job of the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate drugs, and any product that claims to treat or prevent disease or affect the function or structure of the body can be classified as a drug. All drugs must receive FDA approval before they can be sold, which can be a long and expensive process.

To determine if a product is a drug or not, the FDA looks at its “intended use,” which often involves how the product is marketed. While we are passionate about the positive benefits essential oils can have on our customers’ well-being, Plant Therapy is clear that our products are not drugs.

You might have heard that several essential oil companies received letters from the FDA warning them about making health claims while marketing their products, which would classify them as drugs under the law. We want our customers to know that Plant Therapy has not received such a letter, nor has the FDA been in touch with us regarding our marketing practices or product names.

It is in the best interests of our company and our customers for us to proactively take steps now to ensure that we remain 100%, without-a-doubt in compliance with the FDA rules.

What’s next?

We’ve already changed the names of several products, and more name changes are in the works. If you can’t find your favorite product on our website, or have any questions, please contact us!  We’re happy to help.

Homemade Carpet Cleaner

No matter where we live, winter weather can wreak havoc on our carpets. We track in dirt, snow, slush and everything else we pick up on our shoes and boots. We have had many people ask about using essential oils to remove stains from their carpets, so we brought back this popular post:

My almost 18-month-old took his *berry smoothie downstairs without me knowing. A few minutes later I saw his newly bathed tummy covered in berry smoothie! So, I start the search to see where he made the mess. I stumbled upon three spills on my carpet. All in the same area. I grabbed a dry rag and dabbed up as much as I could and then decided to wait for my Lemon essential oil to come in the mail, I had just ordered it. I knew that Lemon was a natural stain remover and I wanted to try it on this stain (yes that is right, I waited 3 days to remove the berry stain from my carpet so I could test the stain remover recipe I found for you). You are welcome!

Here are the results of my waiting!

The big stain was about 4 in. x 2 in. The smaller two stains were about the size of a quarter. (Yes I was lucky it wasn’t worse. I guess most of the smoothie was on him!) Here’s a great deodorizing carpet powder to try as well!

Homemade Spot Remover

What you will need:

  • 1 tbsp vinegar (I use white distilled)
  • 2 tbsp baking soda
  • 2 drops Lemon Essential Oil (natural stain remover)

Mix ingredients together to form a paste. Then, work the paste into the carpet stain with a rag, sponge, old toothbrush or whatever you want. (always test out on a small area first. All carpets are different)


Allow the paste to dry; then vacuum up the baking soda, and the stain should be gone. My stain was gone the first time! It took about 20 minutes to dry completely.

Note: Some stains may need to be treated more than once.

25 Ways to Use Essential Oils


  1. To clean fresh fruit, add 2-3 drops of Lemon Essential Oil to a bowl of cool water and cover entire fruit. Can also be added to a spray bottle. Rinse the fruit and enjoy!
  2. Add 10 drops of Germ Fighter Synergy to 8 oz. of witch hazel or purified water in a spray bottle and use as a disinfectant for surfaces and the air. Store for up to 2 weeks in the fridge.
  3. Add a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil to purified water in a spray bottle to use an air freshener. For Bathroom purposes, add Lemon or Plant Therapy’s Citrus Burst Synergy. Store for up to 2 weeks in the fridge.
  4. For General purpose cleaning, add 2 cups of white vinegar and 1/8 cup of baking soda to 2 cups of purified water. Then add 6 drops of each of the following: Tea Tree, Lemon and Lavender Essential oils.
  5. To keep your car smelling good, add a drop of your favorite essential oil to Plant Therapy’s Diffuse On The Move and enjoy your favorite scent every time you are in your car!
  6. To dispel household cooking odors, add 5-10 drops of Orange Sweet Essential Oil to a pan of simmering water. (Great option if you do not own a diffuser!)
  7. To deodorize your carpet, add a few drops of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, or your favorite essential oil to a small box of baking soda. Sprinkle onto the carpet, let sit for about an hour and vacuum. Another great option is Germ Fighter or KidSafe® Germ Destroyer!
  8. Facial Scrub- Take 2 – 3 teaspoons raw oats and crush into smaller bits either by hand or in a grinder. Mix the dry oats with pure honey, 1/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 1/4 teaspoon of Grapeseed Carrier Oil until it forms a smooth mixture. Add more honey as needed. Then add 1 drop of Basil Essential Oil to the mixture. For problem skin, you can replace the Basil with Tea Tree or Plant Therapy’s Zit Fighter Synergy.
  9. For a neck tension, as soon as you feel it coming on, rub Peppermint Essential Oil or Plant Therapy’s Tension Relief Synergy or KidSafe® Tension Tamer to your temples, back of the neck or wherever the tension is coming on. You can also use Plant Therapy’s personal aromatherapy inhalers.
  10. Facial Moisturizer- Fill a 1 oz bottle almost full with your favorite carrier oil:  Rosehip Carrier Oil is good for aging skin and sun damaged skin, Evening Primrose Carrier Oil is good for dry skin, and Fractionated Coconut Oil is your overall face care oil. Add 1-3 drops of your favorite facial essential oil: Lavender is good for all skin types, Tea Tree is good for blemishes, Peppermint is good for all skin types but will leave a cooling effect, Plant Therapy’s Anti Age Synergy is good for aging. Apply a dime size amount to skin after washing.
  11. Shampoo- 8 oz bottle of unscented shampoo
  1. Bath salts- Mix 2 cups of Pink Himalayan Salt, 1/2 cup of your favorite carrier oil and 10-15 drops of one of the following essential oils: Lavender, Relax, Energy, Rapid Relief, KidSafe® Nighty Night or your favorite essential oil.
  1. Inhale Plant Therapy’s Munchy Stop to help curb the appetite and lessen the impulse to overeat.
  2. Perfume- Add 1-5 drops of essential oil to 1/4 teaspoon of carrier oil and dab onto your wrist and neck. Some great essential oils to try are Plant Therapy’s Tranquil Synergy and Sandalwood Australian or Patchouli for men’s cologne.
  3. For seasonal sniffles, put a couple drops of Plant Therapy’s Clear Again Synergy or KidSafe® Sneezy Stop in a hanky and inhale several times a day. Continue as needed during allergy season. You can also try Plant Therapy’s personal aromatherapy inhalers.
  4. For minor burns and scrapes, put 20 drops of Lavender or Tea Tree Essential Oil into a 4 oz spray bottle with Fractionated Coconut Oil and spray directly on the wound.
  5. For sleeping concerns, add 1-3 drops of Plant Therapy’s Sleep Aid Synergy to a cotton pad and put next to pillow while sleeping. Can also use Clary Sage or Frankincense. For young children use Calming the Child, Nighty Night or Sweet Dreams.
  6. To help with respiratory problems, diffuse Plant Therapy’s Respir Aid Synergy or KidSafe® Sniffle Stopper into the air. You can also add 1-4 drops to a palm full of your favorite carrier oil and apply to the chest.
  7. Smelly shoes? Add Deodorizing Synergy or KidSafe® Odor Zapper to some baking soda and sprinkle in shoe. Also, can add to a cotton pad and put a cotton pad in shoe.
  8. Test at school or a big presentation at work? Carry Plant Therapy’s Clarity Synergy or Rosemary (or KidSafe® A+ Attention) in your purse/bag and sniff all morning and during. Will help enhance mental focus. Use Plant Therapy’s personal aromatherapy inhalers for a convenient way to carry your favorite essential oils with you on the go!
  9. For a 2 ingredients DIY lotion, combine 2 ounces of Shea Butter with 2 ounces of Organic Sunflower Oil and mix well. Add 12-16 drops of your favorite essential oils for scent. Enjoy!
  10. For a relaxing massage, mix 5 tsp of your favorite carrier oil and 2 drops of each of Lavender, Chamomile Roman, Clary Sage and Geranium Egyptian. You can also add Plant Therapy’s Relax Synergy.
  11. For a pedicure, mix 5 tsp of your favorite carrier oil to 10 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil.
  12. Dry skin- Mix a palm full of Evening Primrose Carrier Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil with 2-5 drops of Plant Therapy’s Soft Skin Synergy or KidSafe® Skin Soother. Apply to problem areas when needed.
  13.  To get the mildew smell out of towels add 1 cup of vinegar, ½ cup of baking soda and 10 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil to the washing machine. Wash towels on high heat.

How to Use Plant Therapy’s 7 & 7 Set


7 & 7 Essential Oil Set


Diffuse into the air using your favorite diffuser, put a drop or two on a cotton pad next to your pillow, or add to unscented lotion or carrier oil to help with sleeplessness. Diffuse Lavender or add to a carrier oil to help with worry and irritability. Lavender is also amazing for the skin can be added to your favorite carrier oil at a 2-5% dilution and applied to the area of concern.

Tea Tree:

Add Tea Tree to a spray bottle of white vinegar or distilled water to combat mustiness in a warm, steamy bathroom. Dilute Tea Tree in witch hazel and dab with a Q-tip directly on teenage blemishes. Diffusing Tea Tree during times of seasonal illness can promote healthier air quality in the home.

Orange Sweet:

Diffuse into the air using your favorite diffuser to freshen up the air. Add to a homemade deodorant or carrier oil and apply to your underarms to be used as a natural deodorant. Orange can be used as a degreaser when added to your favorite cleaning product or just simply apply directly on the grease spot.


Peppermint can be diluted in carrier oil and applied to the temples and back of the neck when having head and neck tension. Add, well-diluted, to a carrier oil for an uplifting massage. It is also helpful to sniff when having a queasy stomach. Also useful at the end of a long day as a foot-soak, add a few drops to a ½ cup of Epsom salt dissolved in warm water and 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. For topical application, dilute to 2-3%.


Diffuse into the air using your favorite diffuser to help freshen the air and clean the air. Add Lemon to your favorite cleaning product and use to clean surfaces. Use 1-2 drops of Lemon essential oil to remove oil, gum, adhesives, and crayons from most surfaces. Lemon can be used in laundry or cleaning products as a natural whitener.

Cinnamon Cassia:

In healthy adults with intact skin who wish to use Cassia as part of a warming blend, dip a toothpick into the bottle through the orifice reducer and then remove, swirling the toothpick in 1 ounce of carrier oil; this is all that is needed for a safe dilution; add 3 drops of Sweet Orange and 2 drops of Black Pepper or Coriander essential oils to complete the blend. For topical application, we recommend a max dilution of 0.05%.  Cinnamon Cassia can also be diffused to bring a spicy scent to any blend!

Eucalyptus Globulus:

Diffuse Eucalyptus Globulus and Frankincense into the air to help support clear breathing. Adding a couple of drops of Eucalyptus to an inhaler blend of Rosemary and Lemon essential oils can help as an afternoon “pick-me-up”. For topical application dilute to 2-4%.

Germ  Fighter:

To help keep yourself healthy–once exposed — mix 1 drop of Germ Fighter with 1 tablespoon of carrier oil of your choice and massage your feet – especially at bedtime and again in the morning before dressing! For topical use, dilute to .5% – 2%. Germ Fighter is great to diffuse during the winter months.

Diffuse into the air using your favorite diffuser. Mix in unscented body lotion or carrier oil and use by applying to your chest, neck, and throat. (Use in a 2% dilution)

The essential oils in this synergy will increase your alertness and help give you some energy. Great for work or at home. Mix several drops in oil or lotion and use on your hands, legs and arms. Use in a diffuser to give the whole room a fresh and invigorating smell! For topical use, dilute to 2%.


Diffuse a drop or two in the bedroom to set a romantic mood. Add to a massage blend to promote closeness; or add to body care products, bath oils. You can also apply to arms, wrists or legs. For topical use, dilute to 3-5%. Simply ENJOY!
