Can Peppermint and Eucalyptus Be Used On Young Children?

eucalyptus and peppermint concerns

This amazing safety information has been floating around some pages and has started to concern a lot of parents who have used these oils on their young children. I contacted Robert Tisserand with some of these concerns and just heard back.

Here are some clarifications:

First- I want to remind everyone that these safety guidelines are for the general public use. This does not mean that these safety concerns will effect every child under the age of 6.

Second- It is better to be safe rather than sorry. There have been studies and cases that have shown that the oils high in these chemical constituents have caused breathing problems in young children, specifically those under 6 years of age. Since it has happened multiple times, the recommendation has been brought to our attention that the experts don’t recommend these oils for young children.

Third- If you have been using these oils on your younger children and they have not been effected by this at all, meaning there breathing has not been effected, then it is fine to continue to use these oils as long as they are diluted correctly AND as long as your child is over 2 years of age. If your child is younger then 2, do NOT use these oils on them or around them where they can inhale large amounts.

Notice at the bottom of the chart that it has dilution recommendations based on age!

  1. I am so glad to see this safety information. I think there is a large misconception that because essential oils are all natural, they are all safe. I think it should be mentioned too that the size and health of a person should be considered when diluting oils. A robust six year old would tolerate the mentioned dilution just fine, whereas a frail, chronically ill, or special needs child may require a greater dilution.

  2. So what about diffusing in the air with young children in the home. Is there a recommendation for how much to use with that and how sage it is šŸ™‚

    1. Diffusion would also be off of the table if your children do have a breathing problem caused by these oils. If they do not then you are fine to diffuse. I recommend you diffuse in a large open room. A good rule for diffusing is max 60 minutes on, minimum 30 minutes off.

  3. Do you happen to have a Synergy Blend/s that could safely be used on a 16mo old that is already properly diluted? I am horrible at math and the ratios for that age are so small, I would be worried I would use too much. If you do not already have one, would you make one?!?! haha!
